This review is for Market Import, Armadale VIC

I have been popping in and out of this shop for years and it is always well stocked with some fabulous pieces, mainly from Mexico, Italy and Spain. Most of the stuff on the shelves, walls, (...hanging from the ceilings!) can't really be found anywhere else, which is why they continue to do a roaring trade. Their wrapping of all purchases - in sheets of brightly coloured tissue paper - is their signature. It's great!

It's always been a bit on the expensive side but over the last few years the prices have gone MAD. I can appreciate that the shop owners must add import taxes, shipping costs and the like to retail prices but sheesh...some of the prices of items at the shop are now, quite simply, OUTRAGEOUS - especially for the hand-made Mexican wares. Surely they're buying some of these items for $1 and selling them for $50? The last time I went in there I was picking things up and quietly laughing at the price tag. That's not good, is it? I used to buy a few pieces there but I just can't do it anymore. Sorry, you've lost me...

This is one of my favourite toy shops to pick up presents for my own children or for other kids' birthday/Xmas presents. The shop is jam-packed with a fantastic selection of toys, some of which you don't see in many shops. There is a particularly good range of educational toys (see the name!) and games etc. My kids and I like wandering around this place.

Highly recommended shop for kids -- and adults.

Fabulous, consistently good coffee. Cosy, low-lit surrounds. Nice staff (I think it's still family-run?). An eclectic crowd of loyal fans. Wide selection of choccies etc. Good vibe.

What's not to love about this Hawthorn institution?

And THANK GOD smoking is now banned because this place used to be so thick with smoke you couldn't see...or breathe...or taste the coffee!! I used to only get takeaways because of this, but now I can actually sit-in and enjoy the place!

This review is for AAMI Insurance, Melbourne VIC

verified email - 26 Jun 2008

I've had a very bad experience with this insurance company and whenever I've relayed my story to others I generally get told a similar story in return. This company doesn't appear to have a good reputation anymore (if they ever did), so I'm surprised to see quite a few positive comments here.

Re. my experience: an AWFUL mess. I was left speechless by the bad attitude and behaviour of most of the AAMI staff I encountered. I can only imagine that it's a trickle-down effect from ruthless upper mngt? The place is full of distrustful and cynical people whose main aim is to save money and screw their clients. I would hate to work in such a negative work environment.

I am no longer insured by this company and I hope to never have to deal with them again.

This review is for Hilltop Cake Shop, Surrey Hills VIC

Great cakes, biscuits and pastries, all baked on the premises by the owners (from Switzerland originally, I think?). The shop has a lovely old-fashioned-cake-shop feel about it.

I particularly like the little cakes which are great for parties; last time I was there it was around $11 for 10 little cakes of your choice, including mini fresh-cream eclairs and fruit/custard tartlets. The ready-to-go bags of biscuits and macaroons are also great and well-priced. The 'celebration' cakes are fabulous to have for a birthday, and the Swiss rolls with fresh cream are really amazing. Savoury food is also top-notch.

The main lady who works there is very friendly and usually has a sample plate of butter biccies or something on the counter. The business has been there for about 20 years, which speaks volumes...

I wish we lived a bit closer to this place. Or maybe I don't ... because I'd be reeeally fat from eating too many mini eclairs.

This review is for Junction Place Medical Centre, Camberwell VIC

I've been going to this medical centre for over 20 years (!) and I've never once thought to go elsewhere. It's been a wonderful centre for me, my mum, sisters, and now my own children. The admin staff are fabulous, and the doctors are very professional and attentive. Occasionally there can be a bit of a wait for an appointment but that's fairly typical of any medical centre. The good news is that the selection of magazines and papers is good and relatively up-to-date. (No 1987 editions of Mechanics Weekly, 1991 Home Beautiful...)

If I can stop just one other person and their car getting caught up with these guys...then something good has come out of my very bad experience.

My only advice is: Don't even think about it!

This review is for Herzog Patisserie Bakery, Kew East VIC

verified email - 23 Jun 2008

This is one of the best bakeries in Melbourne! I've sampled quite a few items here and each bite has been memorable. The pies are perfect, with good meat and lots of it; the sausage rolls are incredible; the cakes (eg, the Japonais)are...no words to describe. I want to know how they do their pastry. I believe the bakery's been there for a while but I've only just stumbled across it when I was in the 'hood looking for food to take back to a group at Hays Paddock. I've been back several times since then and have never been disappointed. The staff are really cheery, too. I find the prices OK, considering the quality of food.

This review is for Brunetti, Camberwell VIC

verified email - 23 Jun 2008

I was so excited when I heard that a Brunetti's was opening in Camberwell, but I've been a bit disappointed with it, really. There's something not quite right about this one. I don't know - is it the location..? Or maybe the interior is too bright and clinical, or something? I must admit to preferring cosier cafe-interiors, rather than the granite/steel type. It really is too 'cafeteria', complete with the noise.

Like the other reviewer, I also find the counter service and number system quite annoying; they need to work out a more customer-friendly method of service. The food is great/delicious (albeit a bit on the pricey side); the coffee is good. The take-home cakes are SO EXPENSIVE...yikes!...but I'm sure they all taste divine.

This review is for Dr Thomas Eggers, Fitzroy VIC

verified email - 21 Jun 2008

I chose Dr Eggers as my ob for my second child as I'd heard great things about him from many friends and acquaintances. He was wonderful from 'go to whoa' - so to speak - and I can highly recommend him; his staff (Margaret and Janine) were also very good. I really appreciated his kindness, calm manner and knowledge during my pregnancy. During labour/delivery he was reassuring and professional - and just terrific.

I didn't have such a great experience with my first ob so I'm pleased that for my last child I had Dr Eggers. A lovely, lovely man. Thank you.
